TMJ Therapy Richardson
Two temporomandibular joints (TMJ) allow your jaw to open, close, and move side to side. Misaligned jaw joints can cause jaw clicking, teeth grinding, facial pain, and discomfort in your temple, ear, neck, and shoulders. Headaches or migraines, as well as earaches, are common problems that stem from TMJ disorder.
TMJ disorder is prevalent in our society, so Dr. Haney will assess your jaw joints at every general exam. We offer non-surgical therapies to relieve the symptoms of TMJ disorder. Equilibration involves building up the teeth to create an ideal bite between upper and lower teeth. Several types of oral splints are also available.
The Tanner Appliance is one type of removable splint. Worn during the night, it shifts the jaw into correct position. Over time, the jaw joints become reprogrammed to their new position.
The Tanner Appliance is one type of removable splint. The L. D. Pankey Institute www.pankey.org/ highly recommends this appliance to help most people deal with bruxism, tooth mobility, wear, recession, and periodontal disease. Pankey dentists worldwide provide Tanner Appliances to help protect their patients’ teeth and restorations from the destructive forces of nocturnal bruxism. This is far different from a simple NightGuard that merely provides a spacer between the teeth. The Tanner is designed to help relax the jaw muscles and reposition the jaw to its natural position. Worn during the night, it shifts the jaw into correct position. Over time, the jaw joints become reprogrammed to their new position. Most of our huge number of patients who wear the Tanner Appliance literally love it so much that they will not sleep without it in place.
The NTI Tension Suppression System is a smaller acrylic splint that fits on the upper or lower front teeth. It prevents back teeth from touching, which inhibits the ability to grind teeth (bruxism). This device is diagnostic and protective. It is superior for those patients who merely “clench” their teeth. The NTI-tss Plus Appliance, like the Tanner Appliance, provides an jaw guidance component that is designed to take pressure off the back teeth and relax the jaw. Relaxing the jaw muscles and relieving the tension often results in decreased headaches, neck aches, and backaches.
Another option is NightGuard, a molded plastic mouthguard that fits over upper teeth. This appliance reduces teeth grinding, as well.
Equilibration: The selective adjustment of teeth to establish a more harmonious relation between the jaw joint, muscles of occlusion, and the teeth. The L. D. Pankey Institute www.pankey.org teaches the practice of equilibration to help teeth function in a more advantageous and comfortable relationship to the jaw muscles and joint. This often relieves tension and decreases headaches, wear, mobility, and damage to the jaw itself. Dr. Haney can determine if equilibration is right for you.
